Revolver 101

This class is usually restricted to 1 or 2 people at a time. It is sometimes listed on the class schedule, but is always available by request, whenever we can get together. While it may be an introduction to the revolver, it can also be more advanced, depending on your needs.

The revolver is perhaps the most iconic of all handguns, with a history going back centuries. The modern era starts in 1836, and by the time of the Civil War (1861-65), the revolver was well-established. The Single Action Army (1873), AKA "The Peacemaker", is also known as "the gun that won the West". While the SSA is still made, they are seldom seen outside of exhibition shooting.

From the early 1900s until about 1986, the primary sidearm for law enforcement was the double-action revolver, in various lengths. The semi-automatic pistol had been available since 1911, but because the conversion from one to the other is difficult, law enforcement was slow to adopt the semi. Some agencies continued to use revolvers until after the turn of this century.

Double-action revolvers are the easiest of all handguns to understand, yet are among the hardest for a new shooter to master. So why bother? Several reasons:

  • They are less prone to malfunctions than any other handgun.
  • With the right choice, they are very concealable.
  • They are relatively safe from accidental discharge.
  • No gun is more rewarding to master.
  • You cannot claim to be a real shooter if you have never shot a revolver.

As is always the case, the more concealable the gun, the harder it is to shoot, so we will concentrate on the 2 inch variety (snubnose).
